Student Projects – Mind My Plants

Made by Team Mind My Plants

Leaf it to the professionals

After one of our team member’s partner was asked to plant sit a car full of plants and realised none of us had ever heard of a concept like this, we were inspired to never let an owners plants perish again, while their owner is on holiday.

In my previous career in technical theatre, I wanted to

take on new challenges and transfer some of the key skills I developed into a new profession. Now, as an emerging junior software developer with a passion for problem-solving through coding, I am eager to apply my skills and drive to real-world projects that meet high industry standards. I am looking to start my career in the tech industry, where I can contribute to innovative and creative ideas while continually improving as a developer.

Software Engineer with 12 years of experience delivering

impactful software solutions across industries such as Energy, Transportation, and Government. I began my career as a Java Developer at a startup and, after two years, transitioned to managing a team of 10 as a Product Manager, overseeing a dozen nationwide product launches annually. As a Project Manager, I lead multiple global projects, solving complex client challenges with innovative, agile-driven solutions. I remain hands-on with full-stack development when necessary and stay at the forefront of emerging technologies. In addition, I hold an Executive MBA from London Business School, focusing on strategy and new ventures development.

After 13 years in the veterinary industry I decided it was

time for a new challenge. I have always been very inquisitive by nature, and think that working in the technology sector would be the perfect mix to challenge both my creative and problem-solving mind. I would particularly like to harness my creative skills in the front-end sector.

My background in engineering and strong technical curiosity

led me to software development, where I aimed to broaden my skills for dynamic problem-solving in technology. At Northcoders, I embraced a rigorous, project-focused curriculum that enhanced my proficiency in a range of development tools, languages, and best practices utilised in industry. My journey through hands-on projects, collaborative tasks, and individual challenges equipped me with the adaptability, precision, and creativity needed for impactful software development roles. I enjoy 3D modelling & printing, exploring applications in design and prototyping. Currently, I’m learning French and developing several personal projects, including recycling PET bottles into filament and building/upgrading a small hexapod robot. My enthusiasm for exploring new places led me to solo travel through France, Spain, and Portugal, further honing my adaptability, problem-solving, and budgeting skills.

A passion for learning and self-improvement has always been

at the forefront of my life. From art and design to philosophy, literature, creative writing, and technology, personal growth is a constant journey. While some say ‘practice makes perfect’, I believe ‘practice makes progress’ is more accurate because we never stop learning. After eighteen years in IT, I took a break to focus on my health and spend time with family. I pursued my passion for literature and gained a first-class honours degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. However, having achieved this dream, my journey has brought me back to technology. I am excited to re-enter the tech field. I chose web development—particularly front-end—because it perfectly combines my creative instincts and technical skills. This unique blend allows me to harness my interests in art while drawing on the invaluable career capital I have built up over the years. Thanks to the invaluable support and excellent training I received at Northcoders bootcamp, I am eager to begin my journey in web development, where I can integrate my creativity, design sensibilities, and meticulous attention to detail.

I am a highly motivated individual currently in the process

of a career change and looking for a role as a junior software developer. My background in telecommunications has allowed me to develop problem solving skills, analytical thinking, and experience working with various different technologies in high pressure environments all of which I believe would be beneficial in a software development role. Currently I am completing a coding bootcamp with Northcoders where I am gaining hands on experience with JavaScript.

Tech Stack

We used: Oracle database, Firebase, Native Wind, React Native, Expo We chose Oracle to streamline our backend. Firebase we used for its messenger service. Native wind for easy styling. React Native for our mobile app and Expo as an app simulator.

Challenges Faced

We faced several blockers including Github merging conflicts, adapting to all the new technologies we chose and team devOps dynamics. We solved them with daily research and compromise, implementing agile best practices.
