Gild: Sales and Finance to Software Engineer

“The structure, community, and job support stood out to me. It didn’t feel like just a coding course, it felt like a proper gateway into the industry.” – Gild Ogbeide, Junior Software Engineer at Maxim Computers

1. When did you graduate from Northcoders?

I graduated from Northcoders in March 2024.

2. What’s your role and which company do you work for?

I’m currently a Junior Software Engineer at Maxim Computers, where I design, build, and maintain bespoke software systems across web, mobile, and embedded platforms.

3. Are you enjoying your role?

Yes, I really enjoy it. I get to apply what I learned at Northcoders in real-world projects and continue growing every day. The variety of work keeps things interesting, and I enjoy solving real problems for clients.

4. How did you find your time on the bootcamp?

It was intense but incredibly rewarding. The pace is fast, but it reflects the real world, and you’re constantly challenged. I learned more in those few months than I ever expected, both technically and professionally.

5. What were you doing before the bootcamp?

Before Northcoders, I worked in sales and finance roles while also learning to code in my spare time. I also completed the E-Careers Web Development Bootcamp, which gave me a solid foundation. Northcoders then helped me take that to the next level.

6. What made you interested in moving into tech?

I’ve always been curious about how things work and wanted a career where I could build solutions and solve problems. Tech gives you the tools to create real change, and I wanted to be part of that. The creativity and logic involved in software development really clicked with me.

7. What made you choose Northcoders?

I liked their career-first approach and how focused they were on getting people into real jobs. The structure, community, and job support stood out to me. It didn’t feel like just a coding course, it felt like a proper gateway into the industry.

8. What was the support like on the course?

The support was excellent. The tutors were knowledgeable and approachable, and you’re encouraged to ask questions and work together. There’s a big emphasis on collaboration, and the staff genuinely want you to succeed.

9. How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?

A lot. They helped me refine my CV, LinkedIn, and interview skills. But the biggest help was giving me the opportunity to gain paid experience through their partnership with Tech Returners. That allowed me to apply my skills in a real consultancy environment and gave me something strong to add to my CV.

10. Do you think that Northcoders prepared you well for your role?

Definitely. The bootcamp teaches more than just coding—it teaches problem-solving, working in teams, and writing clean, efficient code. It gave me the confidence to take on real projects and contribute from day one.

11. What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?

If you’re serious about moving into tech, Northcoders is a great option. Be prepared to work hard, ask questions, and collaborate. They give you the tools, guidance, and support, but you have to be willing to help yourself too. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out of it. It’s challenging, but if you commit, you’ll come out job-ready with the right skills and mindset to succeed in the industry.
