“I was ready for a career change and wanted something that would challenge me mentally. I’ve always enjoyed problem solving and figuring out how things work, so moving into tech felt like a natural fit.”

Elis, Software Engineer at Sky Betting and Gaming

1. When did you graduate from Northcoders?

In February 2022

2. What’s your role and which company do you work for?

Software Engineer at Sky Betting and Gaming (up to August 2024 when I moved to Los Angeles)

3. Are you enjoying your role?

I really loved my time at Sky Betting and Gaming, it was probably the best job I’ve ever had. Every day brought new challenges that pushed me and helped build my confidence in my abilities. The projects I worked on were not only exciting but also a lot of fun, which made the experience especially rewarding

4. How did you find your time on the bootcamp?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the bootcamp, and I’m still in touch with several people from my cohort. It was exciting to be learning something completely new while being surrounded by others who were just as enthusiastic and motivated, which made the experience really positive and supportive.

5. What were you doing before the bootcamp?

I was working in property management.

6. What made you interested in moving into tech?

I was ready for a career change and wanted something that would challenge me mentally. I’ve always enjoyed problem solving and figuring out how things work, so moving into tech felt like a natural fit.

7. What made you choose Northcoders?

I chose Northcoders because they had a base in Leeds, and I knew I’d learn best in an in-person environment rather than fully remote. I was also impressed by the positive reviews from past students, which gave me confidence in the quality of the course. On top of that, I was fortunate to receive a scholarship that covered the fees, which made it the perfect opportunity to make the transition into tech.

8. What was the support like on the course?

The support was excellent, at no point did I feel like there wasn’t anyone to reach out to for help.

9. How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?

I received a lot of support after graduating, from help with CV writing and interview techniques to guidance on how to approach the job market. Northcoders also had access to opportunities and employers that I wouldn’t have been able to find online, which gave me a real advantage in the job search

10. Do you think that Northcoders prepared you well for your role?

Yes, definitely. I learned that it’s not so much the specific coding language that matters, but how you approach a problem. At Northcoders I studied JavaScript, but my first role was Scala and Java based. Thanks to the problem-solving skills I developed during the course, I felt confident in picking up new languages and applying them effectively.

11. What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?

I would definitely go ahead with it, it was one one of the best decisions I ever made.
