Daniel: From Healthcare to Software Engineering, 3 Years On

We caught up with Daniel, a Northcoders graduate from 2023. He shares his thoughts on his bootcamp experience now that he has been in the tech industry for a few years.

What year did you graduate from Northcoders?

2022-2023 data engineering bootcamp.

What job role are you now in?

Software Engineer at Arm

How have you found your experience progressing in the industry?

I came to the tech industry as a career changer with no formal higher education. The transition was difficult, but worth it.

After graduating from Northcoders I made the decision to undertake a degree apprenticeship. It was a very good option for me.

How did you find your time on the bootcamp?

The bootcamp was great. Its structure mirrored the way I work now in industry and it gave me a solid foundation.

The mental models I use for things like programming fundamentals and CI/CD are the ones I was taught at Northcoders. I use the knowledge, skills and behaviours learned on the bootcamp on a daily basis.

What were you doing before the bootcamp?

I worked in healthcare.

What made you choose Northcoders?

I’d heard many times that it was the best. Northcoders was actually my second bootcamp and it was a night and day difference from the first one.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?

If you want to learn to code, there are many free resources online. If you want to learn to work like a software engineer, go to Northcoders.

Northcoders will give you a foundation like nothing else (if you put the effort in) while providing great momentum while entering the tech industry.

When interviewing in Manchester I actually met people that were graduates themselves; it’s a recognised sign of quality and an established pathway to a new career in tech.
