Hi Tommy, what were you doing before the bootcamp and what is your job now?
Before Northcoders, I had just completed my undergraduate degree in Musical Theatre and didn’t have any clear career aspirations. After the amazing foundational learning that Northcoders gave me, I was able to land a Graduate position at CreateFuture. Three years on, I have reached a Junior Engineer position and found that I want to deepen the knowledge I was given by attending a master’s program in Computer Science at the University of Liverpool. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the foundational teachings that Northcoders gave me!
What made you interested in moving into tech?
My biggest motivation for moving into tech was how the industry was shaping and actively looking for juniors. I have always been interested in tech and gadgets, so getting a peek behind the curtain as well as a real career was my biggest motivator.
What made you choose Northcoders?
I chose Northcoders due to seeing the LGBTQ+ podcast that Northcoders released first. I was looking into bootcamps at this point, but saw how open and accepting Northcoders was through that podcast. (You can find Northcoders’ ‘QueerCoded‘ podcast here.)
What was the support like on the course?
The support was great! I think at the time I felt there was a large reliance on other students in the form of pair programming, but I think that with hindsight, this has helped me learn how to pair program really well.
How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search?
Job support was fantastic! I had around 10 meetings with the career advisor, where my CV was fully looked into with actual experience and not just running it through AI!
Do you think that Northcoders prepared you well for your role?
