“The teaching standard was high, and the atmosphere was welcoming, which made a big difference.”

Daniel M, Front-End Software Developer at BrightHR

When did you graduate from Northcoders?
November 2023

What’s your role and which company do you work for?
I’m currently working as a Front-End Software Developer at BrightHR.

Are you enjoying your role?
Honestly, I love it. The role challenges me in the best way, and I’m lucky to be surrounded by smart, supportive engineers who are always pushing me to grow.

How did you find your time on the bootcamp?
It was great, the first four weeks we went over a lot of the fundamentals. We did an intro to back end and front end. Then a group project which was fun to do! I also made great connections along the way.

What were you doing before the bootcamp?
I worked at a company specialising in the distribution of spare parts for commercial catering equipment.

What made you interested in moving into tech?
I have always been interested in computers and logical puzzles, so I wanted to learn to code as a hobby to build fun projects and express my creativity. I decided to try to make the leap to do it full time as I really enjoyed it.

What made you choose Northcoders?
Multiple things, I heard good things about it from an acquaintance, I also liked the connections they had and how the course was structured.

What was the support like on the course?
The mentors were knowledgeable, super approachable and always willing to help out. The teaching standard was high, and the atmosphere was welcoming, which made a big difference.

How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?
I personally received good support, but I engaged heavily with the careers team and went to events set up by Northcoders to network. I found my first (current) role through their jobs board.

Do you think that Northcoders prepared you well for your role?
Northcoders is a great opportunity for starting your tech journey. While it’s not a guaranteed path to a job, it gives you a solid foundation and plenty of support to build on.
The tech industry is very competitive, so success depends on how much time and effort you’re willing to invest before, during, and after the bootcamp.
I personally spent around 1000 to 1500 hours learning before landing my first role (including bootcamp time and extra studying) but that can vary widely from person to person.
Think of the bootcamp as a stepping stone: it can fast-track your learning and give you the momentum to move forward.
