Making Gardening Easy

Plantify is a gardening app designed to promote gardening curiosity and development in new and existing gardeners. Post-Covid gardening has been on the rise, with more and more people every year trying their hand at the ‘green finger’ lifestyle. Gardening is all encompassing; managing a garden is a complicated and lengthy process that really never has an end in terms of learning. This is where Plantify comes in! There’s a lot of information that goes into gardening from understanding bloom season, soil moisture and how the weather itself influences how your plants grow. Our built-in plant identification feature allows users to identify plants on the go, provides information on them and can also store them in-app in a favourites list. Plantify offers the user a chance to build out their gardening knowledge from the ground up. Furthermore, our app includes a built in discovery page, promoting plant exploration, a quiz feature, and hints and tips that all allow the user to develop more skills and experience in the gardening world! The user experience is supposed to feel calm, seamless and minimalist.

Tech Stack

Tech Stack for this group

We used JavaScript, TypeScript, React Native, Render, Supabase, Axios, Nativewind, Expo, Express, Supertest, PostgreSQL, API’s We chose this tech stack as it allowed the most functionality and flexibility with the style of app that we designed. Using React Native worked for IOS and android plus Typescript was great for testing.

Challenges Faced

adjusting to the syntax of type script was a challenge as there were a bunch of new data types when interacting with our database and api such as query response and express response. We also had trouble connecting to the external api plant net which we used for integrating our plant recognition Post method. On the front end, the main challenge was the teething period learning react native and Nativewind, as well as that we had the challenge of working with photo identification which was a big problem to solve.
