Hairdresser to C# Developer

Oli's story

Oli's story

How did you find your time on the bootcamp?

The main emotion I recall when thinking about my time on the course was, fun. The learning environment is supportive and unassuming, which makes a fast-paced potentially stressful process exciting.

Northcoders taught me how to learn, now I am confident that I can pick up any language and teach it to myself!

January 2018

What were you doing before the bootcamp and what made you apply?

I worked as a hairdresser/educator. I wanted to be in an industry where I can continuously evolve. Working in software development, your creativity is not capped by the industry you work in.

What was the support like on the course?

It is apparent that the tutors enjoy teaching. I felt comfortable asking for help. I was encouraged and guided in finding the solutions myself which is essential for any developer.

How much support did you receive from Northcoders with your job search after the course?

It was clear that I would only be put forward for a job that we all thought that would be best suited for me. Rather than just finding a job, I felt there was a lot of effort in finding a place that I would be happy working.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying?

Get a basic understanding by using online tutorials and then hammer the katas. Practicing katas is the thing that made me realise I have a passion for coding. They are a lot of fun to do, and if you can get really good at problem-solving, everything else will come.

Anything else you would like to add?

Northcoders taught me how to learn. After learning JavaScript on the course, I am now a Junior C# developer. Before starting the course, I didn't know where to start with learning to code, but now I am confident that I can pick up any language and teach it to myself!
